Abegondo, 8 June 2020. The Quality Brand of the Mariñas Coruñesas Biosphere Reserve continues to grow in the number of affiliated companies. Recently, the brand has incorporated a new company, Adegas Bordel, based in the concello of Abegondo. The president of the Biosphere Reserve, José Antonio Santiso Miramontes, and the technician of the entity, Miguel Fernández Pardo, came, a few days ago, to know in depth the product of the company and its plans for the future.
At the head of the Abegones company is Xosé Antonio Meixide Fernández, known to many as ‘Tonecho’. Abegondens combines his devotion to viticulture with his other passion, teaching, which he exercises at the Centre for Agroforestry Training and Experimentation in Guísamo.
During the visit, the president and the reserve technician met, not only the facilities where Meixide prepares his “made broths”, but also his vineyard of approximately half a hectare.
Meixide and his family have owned a vineyard for 20 years. A year ago, Meixide decided to take advantage of the possibilities of its plantation to market its product: “we dye aha lot of tin that was not consumed and we decided to season for sale by taking advantage or great recoñecement that was starting to ter or Branco Lexítimo”. This is precisely one of its star varieties, although it also has “Godello e Mencía, in less quantity”. Currently, the vineyard produces on average about 2,500-3000 liters of Branco Lexítimo, and is being marketed in restaurants in Betanzos, among other municipalities.
However, the vineyard is by no use of Meixide. Added to it are others, such as its experimental crops of kiwis, apples and other chestnut breeding crops. In the medium and long term, the intention of the winegrower is to promote a project in which they “join the training of visiting Persians and post in value to agronomic potential of Abegondo”. During the visit, Santiso congratulated Meixide on his initiative, and agreed with him on the need to continue betting on “tourism linking ao territory and gastronomy”.
As for the benefits of being attached to the Quality Brand of the Biosphere Reserve, Meixide is clear: “i am one step more to build a facer territory, to grow in value or incomensurable heritage that we temos na nosa comarca”.
A distinction for indigenous producers. As Mariñas Coruñesas e Terras do Mandeo became, in 2018, the first Biosphere Reserve in Spain to have a quality seal for its native producers. This distinction currently brings together 30 companies from the following municipalities: Arteixo, Oleiros, Cambre, Carral, Bergondo, Miño, Abegondo, Betanzos, Paderne, Coirós, Oza-Cesuras, Irixoa and Curtis.
The project was born with the aim of differentiating, adding value, promoting and disseminating local resources, products and services to promote the economy in the territory of the Reserve.
