DESIGN OF TOOLS TO MINIMIZE THE IMPACT ON THE NATURAL ENVIRONMENT IN PURÍN’S APPLICATIONS OF PORCINE EXPLOITATIONS.

Link: Agriculture and rural development > Financing the Common Agricultural Policy (FEADER)

Expte : CGO/2016/121

 Description of the project initiative:

The significant growth experienced by the pig sector in recent years has led to the intensification of production systems and improved yield in the final product. However, this process of intensification of production had as counterpart the increase of the by-products generated, such as slurry and cleaning waters of the farm, which are not useful in them and whose post-processing entails a high cost for the exploitation, As a consequence, slurry is often discharged irregularly and without complying with basic safety standards, causing a significant environmental impact.

In order to solve this problem and mitigate the impact on the natural environment and groundwater in areas close to pig farms, this initiative seeks to find solutions in pig farms to improve the management of the byproducts generated in them .

Through this initiative the main factors that lead to malpractice in these farms are characterized for the subsequent design of optimization methods for the processes of obtaining and postprocessing slurry. In addition, a six application will be designed containing the information on the management of uses and activities in the territory to help inform in an efficient and coordinated manner the authorizations and other relevant legal controls that are within their respective jurisdiction. In this way, pig farms can improve their efficiency, reduce costs and their environmental impact, thus adapting to the new regulations on waste management that will soon be applied to this type of productive farms.

The final objective of this proposal is to form an operational group with the appropriate and relevant actors in the matter of management of slurry, both from the point of view of the cattlemen, responsible technicians responsible for the autonomic environmental administration, the rural environment, etc. . As well as in the local administration with competences in the matter.

DESIGN OF A TOOL BASED ON NEW TECHNOLOGIES FOR THE TRANSFER OF  I+D+I RESULTS IN THE DAIRY SECTOR.

Link: Agriculture and rural development > Financing the Common Agricultural Policy (FEADER)

Expte: CGO/2016/117

Description of the project initiative:

The ultimate objective of the operational group is to improve the competitiveness of dairy farms in less-favored areas; Encouraging the transformation in the own farm in small local industries; Improving the contribution of innovations and new solutions to the sector; Disseminating processes of transformation of dairy products that are technically and economically viable in these circumstances. To this end, a tool will be designed based on new technologies to bring innovation to the sector and facilitate market entry.

This tool will allow producers to network with researchers (from universities and technology centers) who work in the dairy sector, providing research results and stimulating diversification. The tool will also be able to participate the agents that are in contact with the farms, such as the county agrarian offices, the rural development groups, and the cooperatives, leagues, advisers and other agents (inputs suppliers, such as additives, crops, crops …).

The network will share technical information, which is understandable and assimilable by the farms, and this will be its greatest added value, many people sharing thematic information oriented to the diversification of the Galician dairy sector.

The information will also be useful to stimulate projects of improvement in the rural environment by the agents dynamizadores. It will include information on milk processing as well as on distribution, with criteria of raw material quality, final product, process control and traceability requirements. Likewise, it will be accompanied by an area in which an economic evaluation of the investments to be made in an improvement can be made. It will include videos, tutorials, as well as bibliographical references to delve into the various topics.

Regarding the processes to be analyzed, a fundamental condition in disadvantaged areas is the commercialization. Almost all dairy products require a cold chain, unless thermal processing is preferred after packaging (aseptic packaging is normally discarded). The simplest, for life and equipment, are the cheeses, in which there are many possibilities of differentiation and personalization, so that you can avoid competing with the cheeses that are already on the market.

Yogurts are also products that have many possibilities, in which without much complication you can make good products. The lines of yogurts for drinking, or mixtures of yogurt and smoothie fruit are derived from these lines. The tool will allow you to transfer all this information, as well as a range of dairy products of tabletop and differentiated quality, with a very careful image. Some of them can be made and packaged, finally being sterilized in an autoclave.

The tool will allow access to new production lines, within the logic of small rural farms: the sale of pasteurized milk is very simple but in principle its limited interest in small consumption in Spain, although there are examples of pasteurization in own Farm that work well. Other possibilities such as butters or smoothies are even more difficult to defend from a commercial point of view. Although it also presents limitations, in this case of process, the application of ultrafiltration techniques to concentrate the milk in the operation, and to elaborate milk to measure of industrial consumers must also be analyzed, reducing the costs of distribution.

To minimize the problems of higher costs of operation and distribution, it is possible to resort to the sharing of resources by several cattle ranchers, or to the maquilas made by small industries of products with the cattle brand.
